Yesterday I backed up all my camera phone pictures onto my laptop. Looking through them it’s made me realise two things. How amazing the last 18 months has been and how quickly the last 6 months have just completely disappeared. If there was a way to slow down time, I’d like to know about it please. Everything is just going so fast that I know I’m going to wake up soon and be 30… THIRTY… (it’s three and a bit years away but still…)
You’ve achieved success in your field when you don’t know whether what you’re doing is work or play - Warren Beatty
A couple of weeks ago I directed a film for Atlantic signed artist (and awesome wonder kid) Paul Thomas Saunders. At the time of pitching we were given complete artistic freedom to create a short film to the song ‘A Lunar Veteran’s Guide to Re-entry’.
We were given a really small budget (£1200) to do it and only two weeks to complete it. For four days James Rhodes and I disappeared into the various wildernesses of Yorkshire to shoot it. It was fairly intense.
Other than the underwater photography and sequences shot in the Dream Club we never went over a crew of three (me, James DOP and Giles Smith or Jamie Adair as camera assistant). The producing was insane. Always on the run. Always needed for the next minute. Sara Auty, who’s new to Left Eye was an absolute life saver as an assistant producer giving up god knows how much sleep to the project. As the film brought in no profit for the company we were all doing this as part of our normal week. It meant we weren’t getting much sleep.
Somehow it all added to the feeling of the piece. Being close to sleep constantly. Everything feeling a bit surreal and magic
When we came to edit it, 2AM on Saturday morning for a Monday morning delivery Josh and I decided to do it in turns. An hour on. An hour off. But when Josh fell asleep until 7.30AM the rough cut was done by the time he woke up. After that though it was all Josh. From after effecting certain sections to fine tuning the film I was pretty much non existent.
We rallied for Paul to come and watch the film. My third or fourth wave hitting me after being awake for 30 hours.
Three days after delivery we had a call from Atlantic. They loved the film but wanted us to change entire bits. They didn’t want a love story or certain imagery. They really needed a darker edit for how they were releasing Paul as an artist. After quite a bit of fumbling and worrying we decided we’d do two edits. One for Atlantic and one for me.
And this one is mine. Really hope you like it
This just blows my tiny mind
